Truckee’s youth wrestlers impress at first two meets
January 13, 2018
The Truckee wrestling team continued to rack up more mat time during winter break, competing at Spanish Springs High School, in Reno, on Dec. 29 for the Cougar Junior Varsity Bash.
Senior Reed Belardi led the Wolverines with a third-place finish in the 152-pound division at the meet. Belardi defeated his first opponent via a 19-4 technical fall, and then pinned his next opponent to move into the semifinals. There, Belardi would be topped by Yerington's Ryan Barns, knocking him into the consolation bracket.
Belardi, however, rebounded by pinning his next opponent to reach the third-place match, where he picked up his fourth stoppage of the meet with a pin of Bishop Manogue's Max Kiker. Truckee freshman James Atkinson also picked up a win by fall in the fourth round of the consolation bracket in the 106-pound division.
Three of the Lady Wolverines were also on the mats on Dec. 29, competing in the Sierra Nevada Classic girls' tournament at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center.
Junior Miranda Parkhurst led the team with a sixth-place finish in the girls' 189-pound division. Parkhurst pinned her first opponent 33 seconds into the final round, but wasn't able to get past any other wrestlers on the day. Freshman Dylan Ceja and senior Hannah Maciel also wrestled for Truckee.
In youth wrestling, the Sierra Wrestling Association (SWA) got its season underway with a pair of meets for the children's club team.
