Local cross-country racers climb podium at day two of junior nationals (updated)

Day two of the US Ski & Snowboard Junior National Cross-Country Championships at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Utah brought a pair of podium finishes for local athletes.

Sugar Bowl Academy skier Lexie Madigan claimed a second place in the finals of the 1.3-kilometer skate sprint, and in doing so, posted the best result by a local so far at the weeklong championships; while Auburn Ski Club's JC Schoonmaker claimed a third-place finish on the boys' side.

Madigan won her quarterfinal and semifinal races, but finished 0.31 seconds behind Logan Smith, of Sun Valley Ski & Snowboard Teams, in the finals. Smith finished the girls' 16-and-under race with a time of 2 minutes, 57.93 seconds

On the boys' side, Schoonmaker picked up a win in his quarterfinal race, and was second in the semifinals. He then finished the finals of the boys’ 18-and-under race 0.74 seconds behind race winner James Kitch, of Cambridge Sports Union, who finished with a time of 2 minutes, 47.21 seconds.

In the 20-and-under boys’ group, Brandon Herhusky placed fourth with a time of 2:37.08. Herhusky raced for Sugar Bowl Academy and now skis for the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Several other local athletes competed but none were able to make it out of the quarterfinal round. Competition at the cross-country championships will continue on Friday, March 9, with the 5- and 10-kilometer skate mass start.
