Officials with the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District’s STEPP program recently donated a microwave to the KidZone Museum in Truckee.

STEPP, established in 1998, is a program for pregnant and parenting teens. It offers infant and toddler child care on-site at Sierra High School for TTUSD students and their children.

The program offers free child care for these students while they are attending school and pursuing the goal of graduation.

In the afternoons, the teen parents are required to attend parenting and life skill classes to help assist them in becoming good parents and being able to take care of themselves and their children.

The KidZone Museum is an integral partner with STEPP — the teen parents and their children visit the museum weekly to attend fun programs.

“The moms love the child development classes with Ileana Vokel at the museum,” says Cindy Maciel, the STEPP director. “Class covers ideas and activities these young mother’s can do at home with their young children.”

Each activity focuses on key child development areas that foster healthy children and the mom’s receive information and activity recipes to do at home.““We are a lucky partner because the STEPP families volunteer to help us with special events, and help us learn more about how to be strong and combat all the obstacles that face a young parent. The STEPP families are amazing,” said museum director Carol Meagher. “The microwave is a much loved gift at the museum for all the visiting families to use.”
