Local artist Jane Lufkin believes that art is something we are born with and something that is hard to deny.

“It is a genetic blessing, or curse, that is,” she said.

Lufkin was inspired to create art from an early age and recalls asking for art supplies for Christmas and getting the chills in anticipation for art class as a child in school.

After learning from art classes in painting, Lufkin went to college and later enjoyed a successful 20-year career practicing landscape architecture in Sonoma County as well as teaching drawing and design at the Santa Rosa Junior College for many years.

“After the birth of my second set of twins, Len and I Decided that it was time for me to retire from practice, move to Truckee, and focus on child rearing,” she said.

She and her husband Len have lived in Tahoe Donner for the past 12 years and during that time Lufkin painted regularly, and says she has become obsessed with it for the last seven years.

Lufkin is known for her vibrant palette and expressive impasto brushstrokes.

The dramatic landscapes of the Truckee-Tahoe region among other travels in the western part of the country have inspired her to create vibrant pieces.

“My inspiration for creating artwork comes from the beauty that surrounds me each day living in the Truckee Tahoe area,” she said.

“Tahoe is a place that has distinct seasonal changes and natural features that are rich with color. It’s the perfect place to inspire artwork year round.”

When she drives, hikes, skis or rides her bike, Lufkin says she is always on the lookout for inspiring views and interesting compositions.

“There is nothing more challenging or exciting to me than picking up my paint brush and trying to express in oil paint, not only what I see, but also what I feel. As an artist, it is my job to interpret the landscape by filtering what I see with what I know and what I feel. It begins with an inspiration and the Truckee Tahoe landscape has that in spades,” she added.

Lufkin’s works will proudly be displayed from the Northwest Reno Library Gallery in an exhibit entitled Bold Impressionism from March 3 – April 28 for the public to enjoy.

“When people view my artwork I want them to feel moved by the experience. They should be able to walk into the painting and take a journey through the colors and textures and feel the movement in the composition. The painting should give them what they need in that moment, peace, joy, inspiration or just a period of reflection,” she said.

Lufkin’s works and reproductions are also available for purchase from Mountain Arts Collective, Truckee’s newest art gallery conveniently located in the train depot within the heart of historic downtown Truckee.

Those shopping in North Lake Tahoe will also find Lufkin’s pieces at North Tahoe Arts in Tahoe City, and Handmade At The Lake, located in Incline Village.
